"The produced pieces, work as individual paintings that subject landscapes and nature as a tool in creating atmospheric images. I wanted the paintings to reflect how I feel and interpret nature and to take a ‘Romantic’ approach to the work. Each painting comes from a respect of nature and my practice.
"Throughout my practice, I have researched into both Contemporary and Romanticism landscape paintings as an influence in my method of painting. Through the Contemporary painting I have looked at the surface qualities, paint can create. For this I looked towards Peter Doig’s works and Elizabeth Magill as artist references. Through Romanticism paintings I focused on how the artist dealt with detail. What I have learnt through my work is that by leaving out detail the more interesting the work becomes. It is important within my paintings that I make a balance between detail and suggested detail for there to be the element of atmosphere.
"Other artists such as Paula Rego and Olafur Eliasson are not obvious in relation to my work, however they were great influences to my ideas behind the paintings. I looked at Rego’s work for her method of translating a story/ narrative in her Dog Woman paintings and Eliasson in terms of how the piece The Weather Project affected me when I saw the work and how to incorporate that emotional element in my paintings." |
